UPSTAIRS (From 7pm): Documentary & feature films, speakers & discussion on issues relating to Latin America this month with films on Colombia (Films in Spanish with English subtitles) Including:
RESISTENCIA: Hip-Hop in Colombia (51min, Dir. Tom Feiling)
Screened at over 30 international film festivals and winner of a host of festival awards Resistencia is a thought-provoking exploration of how young Colombians feel about the crisis afflicting their country. The film follows a summer in the lives of some of Colombia's finest rappers, DJs and breakdancers. The film serves as an introduction to Colombia's 40 year-old civil war, as seen through the eyes of those directly affected by it. It also gives an intimate insight into life in the barrios of a very volatile country, and how traditional latino music is losing out to rap music. Entertaining, committed and enlightening, Resistencia offers a street level interpretation of current affairs in Colombia.
Director Tom Feiling will introduce the film and take part in a Q&A afterwards
VOLVER A LA GENTE (Dir: David Caneva, 2006)
A documentary about the women who had to assume the status of head of the refugee families because of the loss of men due to the armed conflict in Colombia. The film exposes the crude reality of the manner in which the Colombian government has abandoned these communities, while attempting to help integrate them with the society that denies their existence.
Presented by the director followed by Q&A
+ Short film and presentation by STRANGERS INTO CITIZENS
Strangers Into Citizens is a campaign by the country's largest alliance of civic institutions for a pathway into citizenship for undocumented migrants who have made new lives in the UK. The Citizens Organising Foundation (COF) believes the case for an "earned amnesty" is compelling, on humanitarian, economic, fiscal and administrative grounds; and is busy building an alliance of citizens calling on Government to implement a one-off "earned amnesty" law as part of its overhaul of the UK's immigration policy
